Matt Hougan is one of the world’s leading experts on both crypto assets and ETFs. He is the Chief Investment Officer for Bitwise Asset Management, one of the largest pure play crypto asset managers in the US, where he helps manage the index methodologies that underlie Bitwise’s investment products and conducts fundamental research into the role bitcoin can play in a diversified portfolio. Matt played a key role in developing the Bitwise Bitcoin ETF (BITB), which launched in January 2024. BITB donates 10% of its gross profits to bitcoin developers and is the only US bitcoin ETF to publish its Bitcoin address. Prior to joining Bitwise, Matt was the CEO of ETF.com, where he helped create the first institutionally oriented ETF data, classification and ratings system. He is a three-time member of the Barron’s ETF Roundtable, and co-author of two publications for the CFA Institute Research Foundation: A Comprehensive Guide to Exchange-Traded Funds (2015) and Cryptoassets: A Guide to Bitcoin, Blockchain and Cryptocurrency for Investment Professionals (2019). Hougan is co-founder of Advisor Circle, creator of the FutureProof festival, and serves on the Board of Equbot, creator of the world’s first artificial-intelligence-driven family of ETFs. He is a strategic advisor to a number of firms, including Blockworks and StratiFi. He graduated from Bowdoin College with a B.A. in philosophy.
